Today I’m so excited to feature one of my very best friends who just happens to be a makeup artist extraordinaire! I love this girl to pieces! Johanna owns JC Makeup Artistry and is soo talented and wonderful at what she does! When I first started my business, Johanna and I teamed up to offer our fabulous services together and it’s only been until this past year that we’ve had to change that due to conflicting schedules with Johanna’s other job. We are still working together when we can and I couldn’t have asked for a better makeup artist to work with. I’ve enjoyed watching her talent grow over the years. If you are looking for a fabulously talented makeup artist in Winnipeg to do your bridal/wedding makeup or even makeup for an engagement session, social or any type of event, contact Johanna…she’s AH-MAZING! Her goal is to make you not only look beautiful, but feel be-YOU-tiful!!

JC Makeup Artistry
How long have you been a makeup artist?
I’ve been a makeup artist for over 12 years.
Describe your area of expertise:
Bridal/Glamour makeup – I love doing makeup for weddings and glamour shots, but especially for weddings. Weddings are always a happy, beautiful day and I’m honoured to be able to take part in such an important and special day.
How did you come to specialize in this area?
Through the never ending trust, encouragement and support of Kelly Bik! She helped launch my career in bridal/glamour makeup by placing her trust in me and my skills-set, including promoting my services in her very own wedding photography packages. I will be eternally grateful to Kelly!
How would you describe your style?
My style of makeup artistry is to focus on 1) creating a natural looking, yet flawless complexion and 2) focusing on the eyes. I use makeup to enhance and perfect while still maintaining a sense of “you”. My goal is to always allow you to shine through and to bring out your best.
What is your standby look (the one that everyone tends to want from you)?
Subtly smokey, defined eye in neutral colors with neutral-rosy cheeks and lips… more of a natural look with that little bit of something extra special.
What’s in your makeup bag?
Too much. Haha! I seriously have more products than I need, in both my personal collection and my pro kit. But we’ll only delve into my personal makeup bag that I take with me every day to help shorten the list. Please note: I am not known for packing lightly! LOL! Here goes:
- Annabelle Smoothliner Eye Liners – Brownie (this is waterproof and smudgeproof) and White (to perk up my tired eyes)
- Z-Palette (small) with MAC Eyeshadows – Brule, All That Glitters, Wedge, Brun, Shroom, Malt, Scene, Carbon, Expensive Pink
- L’oreal True Match Touche Magique Concealer – N3 (to touch up the concealer under my eyes and the inner corners of my eyes, and also to clean up any eyeshadow mess if I change my makeup before a night out after work)
- MAC Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer – NC35 (very little goes a long way to cover blemishes)
- MAC Studio Fix Powder + Foundation – C4
- Mark. Retractable Mini Kabuki Brush x 2 (one for face powder and one for blush)
- MAC Blushes – in both Warm Soul and Dainty
- MAC Sheen Supreme Lipsticks – Bare Again (love this color because I don’t need a mirror to put it on and this formula is so moisturizing it feels and works almost like lipbalm) and Impressive
- MAC Lustre Lipstick – MidiMauve
- Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Skin Protectant Cream
- Nivea Pure & Natural Mint & Minerals Lip balm
- Tweezerman Tweezers Set – 1 Slanted-tip and 1 Pointed-tip
- Hello Kitty Noir Compact Mirror
- Essie Deep Conditioning Cuticle OilRohto Eye Drops in either Ice or Arctic
- various makeup brushes, from different lines and of all types.
What is your go-to makeup shop?
For my pro kit and everything color: MAC. It’s a Canadian original that’s become a world-wide fave in the beauty industry, providing the widest color range in everything from complexion products (foundation, concealer, face powders) to color products (eyeshadows, lipsticks, blushes, etc.). Other than that, Sephora. J
How do you stay motivated?
I am fascinated by all things makeup and the artistry of it, so it’s easy for me to stay motivated because there is so much inspiration everywhere I look. I read makeup books, fashion magazines & beauty magazines, and surf the internet to learn new tips, tricks and techniques and to stay on-trend for of-the-moment looks.
What makes your job easy?
My clients… they have all been amazing and beautiful, inside and out. I have been so blessed with having some of the most amazing clients. I am also greatly blessed to have the opportunity to work with 2 of my favourite and talented people on a regular basis, photographers Kelly Bik and Michelle Zerr. I will be eternally grateful for their continual support and belief in me.
Do you prefer to work in the studio, on-location, or both and why?
I prefer to work in a studio, which I dream to have one of my own someday. It gives me a lot of room to work in and good lighting. You can also blast some music, have some drinks and good eats. All while getting beautified and glamourized! On-location is more difficult and unpredictable. I once had to do makeup in a super tiny space with no windows, extremely dim lighting, and low seating (terrible on my lower back). I had to keep taking the bride in and out of the bathroom just to get better lighting; luckily it wasn’t too far from the bride’s room we were in and the bride was a friend of mine. I didn’t try to work out of the bathroom because it isn’t sanitary to do that, especially at a public venue.
What sets you and your work apart from other makeup artists in your area?
The one thing I am most flattered to hear from many of my clients is they feel that they look like themselves, only better, and that the makeup doesn’t feel or look like a mask.
I’m also able to remain cool, calm, collected and focused, even if there’s chaos going on around me; especially helpful on wedding days.
Keep calm, carry on and put some lipstick on. J
Have you attended any workshops that you found to be helpful in your work? If so, which ones?
I’m currently getting my certification in Freelance Makeup Artistry under the tutelage of 2 of the best makeup artists in the business. They are 100% certified makeup artists themselves who have been in this business for a long time now, doing makeup (from basic to special effects) on movies, tv, fashion, bridal and even at the Beijing Olympics. It’s fascinating learning from both of them, especially given their vast range of experience and different makeup styles and personalities. I’m a believer in always learning, always advancing. This course is one of the ways I can do that in makeup artistry. Becoming a certified professional in this industry has always been one of my bigger goals in life, especially because makeup artistry is truly my passion in life. Having worked in cosmetics retail, I’ve been to workshops for Shiseido, Estee Lauder, and Dermablend Corrective Cosmetics. I learned much during my years working behind the counter, but have since adapted those techniques and philosophies to work better for me and in a way that I feel brings out the best in my talent and the best for my clients.
Tell us about your long-term goals.
My long-term goals with makeup are to be able to work out of my own studio one day and be able to work with some more amazing and talented people, particularly in the beauty industry. Teaching makeup artistry is something that has recently come to light for me and I’m thinking about pursuing that road.
Best advice for new makeup artists breaking into the business?
Listen to your clients, carefully, and make sure you focus not only on what they want but in a good balance with what you know will be the best look for them. Choose your words carefully and express yourself and your ideas in an honest and kind manner while being considerate of their ideas and feelings.
If you were not a makeup artist, then I would be:
A singer; not anyone famous, though. Maybe a back-up singer for someone like Whitney Houston (RIP) Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera. To perform on a regular basis with women who have such unmatchable talent would be amazing! Or maybe a Beauty Editor at a fashion/beauty magazine; you get to use and review the newest products before they even hit the market and experience exciting events!
Magazine must have?
InStyle. Hands down, my fave magazine of all time! Love it!
What is your guilty pleasure?
Drinking the occasional Coke/Coca-Cola/Pepsi. I stopped drinking those and anything caffeinated for over 12 years because I couldn’t take the caffeine anymore and I would feel so sick after having them. Just a few months ago, I started having some again, but not often.
My weakness is:
Lip products and chocolate-scented anything.
I am obsessed and have more lip products than I could possibly use. I would say that I’ve probably amassed lip products by the hundreds. You can imagine how many get wasted and how difficult it is to sort and maintain my collection on a regular basis.
What I haven’t found is chocolate-scented hand lotion… if only! Bath and Body Works put out a Hot Chocolate-scented candle in their Winter 2011-2012 collection and I stocked up! But I have to use it sparingly as it burns down quickly. They also put out a Chocolate Chip Cookie mini hand sanitizer in early spring 2012 which smells heavenly! I didn’t get to stock up on that, though, because I found it too late and there were very few left.
My strength is:
My capacity for compassion and being able to sympathize strongly with others. I have to be very careful with this because, in the past, people were able to take advantage of my kindness and abuse my willingness to nurture and to help. I was very naive back then. I’ve learned much since then and gained more wisdom in knowing how to use this strength.
What do you do when you first wake up?
Hit the snooze button a few more times and then take a shower.
Finish this quote: When it rains, always look for the rainbow at the end of the storm.
There’s nothing quite like seeing a bright beautiful rainbow against a gray, cloudy sky.
A rainbow serves as a reminder to me of this: Beauty and peace comes even after the darkest, most treacherous of times.
Who do you love?
My family/friends and even those who don’t love me back as much as I love them.
Do you read your horoscope?
Yes. Believing my horoscope, not so much.
Kandee Johnson. She is an amazing makeup artist!
None. But maybe in the future.
Bring it on!!! Love it! Especially Whitney Houston!
What is on your iPod?
Currently on repeat: Ledisi “Pieces of Me”, AWOLnation “Sail”, Karmin “Coming Up Strong”, Demi Lovato “Lightweight”, Whitney Houston “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”, Gavin De Graw “Not Over You”, Rihanna “You Da One”, Shareefa “Need A Boss”, Coldplay “Paradise”, Amanda Stott “Now’s Our Time (feat. Matt Young)”, Adele “One and Only”, Jessie J “Mama Knows Best” & “Casualty of Love”, Kylie Minogue “All I See”
Morning or night?
My friends say:
I’m a good person with many talents and deserve the best. They always just happen to say it at just the right moment when I need to hear it most but haven’t said anything about it.
I want to explore all the major cities in the world. I haven’t traveled much and want to see more! I haven’t even explored much of Canada! I’ve been all over Ireland, though, and I fell in love with it. I hope to go back and visit more of it!
On my day off:
I like to sleep in, catch up on my tv shows and watch movies (at home and in the theater).
One of your top 100 to do before you die?
To be mentored by an amazing makeup artist despite how intimidating they and their talent may be to me. Probably not the most exciting thing by most people’s standards, but even the thought of this gets me so excited and nervous that I feel like throwing up. Lol!
